The study examines the overall impact of the shale and provides perspective on the significance of the energy activity to the overall economy.

Breakout Sessions:  2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. & repeated 3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.

·         Obligations After the Lease including Royalties, presented by Paul Strickland, Attorney of Hargrove, Smelley, Strickland & Langley, P.L.C.  This presentation will discuss the obligations and rights of a mineral lessor and a mineral lessee, the implied obligations of the mineral lessee, the maintenance of a mineral lease by the payment of rentals, shut-in payments and royalties, and termination and remedies for violation of a mineral lease.  This presentation will also cover assignments, subleases and releases of a mineral lease, as well as division orders in the event of production.

·         Benefits of Natural Gas presented by Tommy Foltz, Executive Director of Consumer Energy Alliance.  Focus on the local, national and global benefits of natural gas production and use in a carbon constrained world.  Learn more about the benefits of natural gas and the potential this natural resource has to benefit our country.  It’s safer, in plentiful supply and often less expensive than most other fuels.

4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. & repeated 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

·         Creative Solutions:  Water Usage in the Haynesville Shale Play, presented by Gary Hanson, LSUS Red River Watershed Management Institute Director. Development of an unconventional resource play like the Haynesville Shale has one thing in common with other domestic shale plays, large amounts of water are needed for well stimulation. As the play exploded in northwest Louisiana, the gas industry encountered a public that was already aware of groundwater concerns. Gas operators, local government, state and federal regulators, and the general public are learning to deal with surface and groundwater issues as Haynesville development moves forward.

·         Workforce Development: Preparing For Careers in the Industry presented by Angela L. White, North Louisiana Economic Partnership Vice President, Workforce Marketing. Since the announcement of the Haynesville Shale discovery in early 2008, we’ve all heard the predictions of the tens of thousands of jobs to be created from development of this major gas find, but what are those jobs and what skills do you need to qualify for them?  At this session gain knowledge of the types of jobs within this industry and the skills required to qualify for them, and hear about existing and upcoming training opportunities–both local and further afield—to make you a more competitive job candidate.
